Welcome to the forty-eighth annual Smithsonian Folklife Festival. This year we celebrate the cultures of Kenya and China.

The 2014 Smithsonian Folklife Festival opened on Wednesday, June 25, with performances by artists from China and Kenya and

“Griddle” is a traditional Chinese cooking style that originates from Sichuan Province. The taste is spicy, fresh, and tongue-numbing.

Upon entering the 2014 Smithsonian Folklife Festival from the west, visitors are greeted by a 30+ meter bamboo flower plaque.

Every year the Folklife Festival Marketplace features handmade crafts and traditional artwork by participants from the featured programs.

Yesterday was the first day of the 2014 Folklife Festival. After a long period of preparation, the grand celebration of diversity of culture feels more and more like a real festival to me now.
